Fisheres Improvement Project
In the Western European retail markets, there is an increasing demand for Greenlandic MSC-certified Greenland halibut products. It is especially the products from the coastal fishery for Greenland halibut with dinghy and dog sled that are exported to Europe. However, the situation regarding biological advice and the management of the Greenland halibut stock has proved to be challenging to the requirements of the MSC standard. Therefore, Sustainable Fisheries Greenland has initiated a dialogue with – among others – the local fishermen and their organizations. This has led to a Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) being initiated. The intention of the FIP project is - within 2-3 years - to clarify and address the challenges that prevent the coastal fishery for Greenland halibut in West Greenland from obtaining MSC certification. The FIP project was initiated in August 2018 and has been made possible because Sustainable Fisheries Greenland has been fortunate enough to be sponsored by the US Sustainable Fisheries Fund.
In April 2019, a brief progress report on the FIP project was prepared. This can be read here.
